BMC-Airfilter Installation

on my Countach Quattrovalvole

First I had K&N 33-2574 Replacement Filters installed, but as you can see on the picture, they broke very soon, the reason is how Lamborghini built the filterhousing.
The housing has no support for the filter, the filter lies in the box, but the opening is about 2mm too small for the K&N, therefore the filter hangs through.
The air passes downwards and tears the whole time, since there is no support under the filter it must break sooner or later. Seems the original paper filters are stronger...

The other thing, the box itself is installed in a not optimal way, it's lying sidewise behind the radiator and it's fans. Like this the hot air cannot escape, Lamborghini cured this by installing a third (all swiss cars) and even a forth fan (in front of the radiator).
They fighted the symptoms but not the cause...

I unmounted the original boxes and installed 2 BMC Carbon Dynamic Airboxen Typ CDA 85-150 instead, following the pictures of my installation.
Nothing on the car must be changed, within 2 hours the car can be reconverted to original state again.
The new filter connections have the same diameter as the car has, namely 8,5cm.
The snorkel to the box instead has 9cm, therfor it's important to use a 9cm diameter airtube.
Here you can see the pieces of the Kit, I shortened the holders (delivered with the filters by BMC) to 6 holes and bended them 90 degrees.

First of all you have to take away the little louvres of the air intake, the louvre is fixed with 4 little screws, they like to fall down...
I laid a towel over the oilcooler below, I found 4 screws between the water and oilcooler being lost during the years.
Now the snorkel can be unmounted, it's screwed onto the radiator.

Now the orignal filterbox can be deinstalled, it's fixed with 2 screws on the pictured socket you can see below. One screw is on the lower side of the box, you can see the hole on the socket. The second one is on the outer end of the filterbox at the fender inside. Well it's a pain to unscrew this one, but fortunately till now all cars had this one missing.
You can see I was cutting the socket, but this is NOT necessary, don't do it! I had to find out how I can install the box and did first act before thinking enough...

The box is installed on the strut holder for the engine hood. I shortened the delivered piece to 6 holes and bended it 90 degrees.

Here you can see the snorkel with the air tube (meanwhile I installed black ones), the length of the tube has to be 40 cm. Now the snorkel and the louvre can be reinstalled in the car.

First you have to install the tube coming from the snorkel to the filter box, since there is not much space under the fender.
Then you will now install the tube between the filterbox and the carbs hoosing.
The tube you're using must be of good resistance, since it is touching the engine and possibly the oil lines, a damaged tube coming from the box could damage your engine!

Here you can see the ready made installation, it takes about 3 hours, the boxes fit perfect under the engine hood, they are hanging free and are mounted on the engine hoods strut holdings.

Now the hot air can pass without problem to the rear louvres, where it was thought to leave the car. On this picture the tube is a little bit too long, when shortened to correct length it descends directly behind the fans motor.

The Carbon Dynamic Airboxes can be ordered at www.bmcairfilter.com, select make Lamborghini and Model Countach and you will see the installation in my car too, it will also appear in their new Catalog.

Well the CDA brought not only a better cooling / hot air flow in the engine bay, but also an improvement in sound and throttle response, I can only recommend to install them. BMC was former importer for K&N-Filters in Italy and their filters use the same technology.
